<image:caption>Air purifiers utilizing negative ionization technology have gained significant popularity in the past few years, but many families remain unaware of its presence and function, lacking the necessary information to make informed decisions. The complex topic of ionization often obfuscates understanding, even for health & wellness influencers, biohackers and root-cause oriented practitioners that are promoting the technology. As a Holistic Mold Consultant and Building Health Professional my goal is to demystify the world of air purification and empower families with the knowledge needed to choose the best solutions for their home, especially in light of the uncertainties surrounding negative ionization.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The idea is, since the particle pollutants clump together, this makes particle pollution easier to remove. (This tech does not however work on gases or VOCs.) Advocates & manufacturers of negative ion air purifiers highlight its agglutinating property (kind of like coagulating or clumping), which enables it to trap airborne pathogens, and potentially prevent the spread of infectious fungi and bacteria in healthcare settings and sterile environments like hospitals. (Fletcher et al. 2007; S. Jiang et al. 2018; S. Comini et al. 2021) Additionally, ionization can boost CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) numbers, further enhancing an air purifier's performance ratings. This can be nominal in some cases overall but most people have no idea CADR numbers are normally calculated when all added features are ON. *If the noise of an air purifier operating on its highest setting is too much for you, keep in mind that this higher setting is typically linked to its advertised benefits like stronger filtration and higher CADR</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What’s Hiding in Your Air Purifier? A Guide to Negative Ionization. - “Don’t worry Though, It’s the Same Level as your Environment”</image:title>
<image:caption>Proponents of negative ionization often draw misleading comparisons between indoor and outdoor environments when discussing ozone. They claim that since ozone exists naturally in small amounts in the open air, its presence in our homes shouldn't be cause for further discussion or analysis. Comparing indoor and outdoor environments when discussing ozone (or mold) exposure misses a critical point: it neglects the fundamental difference in their very structure. Unlike the vast, open-air expanses of the outdoors, our homes are meticulously designed and sealed ecosystems, built to retain energy and regulate temperature. This deliberate design creates a distinct reality, one where every building material, cleaning product, and personal care item contributes to a unique and, frankly, unpredictable chemical cocktail. When ozone enters this confined space, it interacts with this volatile mix in ways rarely seen in nature, potentially amplifying its harmful effects far beyond fleeting outdoor exposures. For holistic homeowners who appreciate their distinct indoor microbiome and ever-evolving chemical fingerprint within their homes, this distinction is crucial. Comparing indoor and outdoor ozone simply doesn't account for the intricate web of environmental factors that play out within our four walls. While the desire for fresh, clean air resonates deeply, understanding the realities of our sealed sanctuaries is essential for making informed choices about the technologies we invite into them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the Harlow House, we prioritize building environments that nurture the intricate ecosystem within and around us. We recognize that a balanced microbial community, not sterile isolation, is the foundation for optimal health. Our approach goes beyond simply eliminating harmful organisms; we advocate for co-existence with the diverse microbial life that plays a vital role in our well-being. This necessitates a shift in perspective, moving from the pursuit of sterility to embracing the interconnectedness of life. We question whether technologies focused solely on eradication truly align with our vision of holistic health for all. Perhaps the answer lies not in complete control, but in fostering a harmonious equilibrium where both our homes and the communities within them flourish in the richness of diverse life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I swiped left to return back to the first photo of the carousel & I silently lipped the words in the graphic once more. “I had to throw away everything.” The casual use of comic sans seemed to soften the words but still, my next thought was, everything?… really? For the record, I wasn’t being pretentious, or cheeky. In fact, I was deeply concerned and alarmed to hear such an absolute statement. “Every-thing” ranks up there with only, always and never. The big guns. The words that you use when things are truly dire, when there is no turning back. We run a pretty pragmatic, virtual, holistic mold consultancy, and it’s actually rare that a person would need to get rid of 100% of their belongings. Meaning, you walk out naked, no clothes, no phone, no wedding rings, not even your license or credit cards. Nothing. Certain contents can be cleaned. I’ve only met one person in my career that was even close to being THAT hypersensitive & it wasn’t all mold. So, it’s not impossible, but not common.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “I had to throw everything away” - In my own story…</image:title>
<image:caption>My health was debilitated. I was bedridden & couldn’t talk without stuttering. I was a shell of the woman, wife & mother I was the year before. My house was full of water damage and mold, but it was all invisible. My kids were sick. My husband was sick. By the end, you could taste it in the air. Our lungs felt like we drank lava, and if you stayed too long, you’d start to feel like you were disassociating. We evacuated at this point. With little guidance, we decided it was best to err on the side of caution due to our collective poor health. Peter went back & forth to the dump for days as we heaved our memories into extinction. We threw away many things that could’ve been cleaned or stored. Unfortunately, we didn’t know what we do now. It’s not like these things are taught to us. Still to this day, the process of sorting & decontaminating possessions is often presented as black & white when realistically, there is a very wide spectrum that requires more than just evaluating how porous something is.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “I had to throw everything away” - no regrets</image:title>
<image:caption>This topic of mold & indoor home health is still in its infancy. Another justification why it’s so significant to be judicious and pragmatic with the words you use & why we often request that non professionals conserve their protocols for personal use only. I don’t look back on what we did with regret. I don’t carry guilt like I made a mistake. Nor should you if it resonates. I am 100% confident in knowing I did what I needed to do at the time to protect my health and my family. When you’re ready, tell yourself that too. Try to own it. If your in a space where your ideology has evolved, that’s ok too. You can tell yourself that you’ve grown & it’s a good thing that you know so much more now.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Reasons Why Mold Experts Don't Use Plate Testing - 3. There is more to mold than just spores</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the bigger obstacles regarding mainstream beliefs around mold, (especially within the traditional mold industry) is the constant sole-focus on just mold spores. Mold spores account for only one small part of a mold colony. Kind of like the acorns to a tree. If we were searching for trees in your house, can you imagine how limited our chances would be if our only evidence was to allow acorns to grown in a garden? That eliminates a huge portion of the primary by-products of growth! When you walk into a forest, what do you see on the forest floor? Evidence of trees growing through the seasons and rebirth. You see leaves, branches, twigs, bark or any other parts of the tree as well. This is the same for mold just on a micro level that we don’t see. Do you see the conundrum here?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Reasons Why Mold Experts Don't Use Plate Testing - 7. Variable Spores</image:title>
<image:caption>Spore concentrations in a home can vary by the room, because of the air flow or human & mechanical activity, by the ventilation, by the climate, season & weather conditions, by the time of day and even vary by floor, height and position within a dwelling. All of these variables & metrics make it difficult to gather a proper historical or realistic glimpse of human spore exposures (inhalation) since the spores are not uniformly distributed in the air. Due to this, Petri-dish plate samples will also produce extremely skewed results as well.</image:caption>

I am a home-health expert, International Mold Consultant & Holistic Health Practitioner living on the East Coast, between DC & Philly. I specialize in working w/homeowners (and renters) who are have encountered water damage and mold in their homes. Most of my clients are very health conscientious, and want higher performing homes with diverse home microbiomes. My career & company (PJ Harlow Wellness) was heavily inspired by my own experiences with mold. (Btw, that’s not me in the pic, I just liked the vibes she was giving in this picture, she looks like she’s ready to take on anything.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking 11 Myths about Black Mold - Myth #1: Black mold is black.</image:title>
<image:caption>The appearance of Stachybotrys is actually more dark greenish-black than pitch black, and it can even appear white, brown or pinkish, depending on what surface it is growing on. Stachybotrys can look different under a microscope vs. on a wall of a building. It's spores are more a brownish color and when they sporulate, the colony may appear to have a powdery surface vs. it’s more notable slime look. Stachy is definitely an alpha mold, but it’s only one of over 20,000 species of black molds. There are also black species of Cladosporium, Aspergillus & Alternaria which are commonly found in sick buildings & homes too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking 11 Myths about Black Mold - Myth #4 Only old homes can get mold</image:title>
<image:caption>Stachybotrys, like most molds prefers the cellulose (sugar) found in trees & dead plants, & regrettably, our homes, buildings & schools are all made from dead trees & their by-products i.e. wood, drywall, particle board, etc. Unfortunately, the way we refine our building materials is literally creating a mold cuisine menu. We end up showcasing our homes with minced, baked & seasoned wood & materials for molds to eat, and wonder why or how this happens? It even got me, and I was in the industry, so don’t feel bad. The fact that we build our homes with mold food is a foundation to discern. In some countries & cities around the world like in Dubai, they have already come up with solutions for this by completely omitting gypsum & drywall, and instead they use Magnesium Oxide Board.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking 11 Myths about Black Mold - Myth #6 black mold only produces one mycotoxin</image:title>
<image:caption>Stachybotrys produces a variety of toxic secondary metabolites (aka mycotoxins) which can be divided into 3 groups, MCTs (macrocyclic trichothecenes), atranones, & PSDs (phenylspirodrimanes). Say that sentence about 5 times. It’s always been amusing to me that the very thing that made me so sick cognitively was practically impossible to prounounce. The more notable MCTs, are satratoxins, roridins, & verrucarins, whereas the S.chartarum ChemoType A biosynthesizes atranones & their precursors, the dolabellanes. MCTs are severely toxic, inhibit protein synthesis, & induce apoptosis (cellular death). Compared w/other molds, Stachy produces a large number of secondary metabolites which can accumulate when growing in homes/buildings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking 11 Myths about Black Mold - Myth #9 mold needs to be alive or viable to harm you</image:title>
<image:caption>Another misunderstanding of Stachy & generally all toxic molds is that they need to be alive or “viable” to harm you. There is a huge misconception that killing mold, makes the problem go away. Molds don’t just disappear if you kill them, and similarly, if those molds are old, or dead, they can still have mycotoxins on them. You can still breath them in, and they can still cause toxicity or allergenic issues. To quote the EPA in 2008, “Dead mold is still allergenic and some dead molds are potentially toxic. The use of a biocide, such as chlorine bleach, is not recommended as a part of mold remediation.” Hopefully, this can put to rest why killing mold is NEVER a solution. Like I tell my clients, we need to approach mold with a more thoughtful approach & understanding, not with homicidal tendencies & ideations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking 11 Myths about Black Mold - myth #11 Spores are the only issue</image:title>
<image:caption>Spores are not our only concern, tbh, they are kind of the least of our worries. When mold spores dry, the simple vibrations of our activity & air velocity can break mold spores into tiny, tiny fragments, (similar to how electromagnetic frequencies can vibrate & break our own DNA). These fragments can be in the micron size, & can be even more harmful than the spores themselves, entering into our blood stream & penetrating our lungs. To give you a perspective, mold doesn’t become visible to us until there are at least, 1 million spores in a sq. inch. There are over 320 times more fragments in a the air than spores! Pieces of mycelium (the network of threads) are often blown away from contaminated surfaces, & some of these pieces remain viable & capable of initiating new growth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Tick bites, Lyme & the Disease divided. - a ticks mouth</image:title>
<image:caption>When seen with a microscope, a tick’s mouth has what looks like twin saws (chelicerae) with an appendage (a hypostome) in between those. The hypostome looks like a long, jagged or barbed sword. As it cuts, it looks as if it is doing the breaststroke with its pair of minuscule mouth saws. That movement cuts and pulls back the skin, plunging the hypostome deeper with each stroke, barb by barb, which, of course, makes them difficult to extract.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Tick bites, Lyme & the Disease divided. - removing a tick</image:title>
<image:caption>If a tick is attached to your skin, it needs to be removed properly and promptly. Use the tick removal device (link above) to spin and remove the tick. This is the best way, so preventative measures are necessary to purchase ahead of time. If you must, you can use tweezers, but it’s not recommended. (Ticks have jagged mouths that are deeply embedded into the skin) With tweezers get as close to the skin as possible, apply steady & even pressure, & gently pull the tick upward from the opposite direction from which it is embedded.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Most people will tell you to run and get tested for “Lymes”. Ok, just so you know, there is no such thing as “LymeS”. Lyme Disease is pronounced & written as LYME, always, both singular & plural. I don’t know where the “S” got added, but I decided to make a note so we can recognize the error. While this may seem nominal to some, it is important in the bigger scope.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Tick bites, Lyme & the Disease divided. - Western blot bands</image:title>
<image:caption>Some Lyme specialists and scientists believe that there are five very specific bands on the Western blot test that are highly indicative of Lyme disease, band numbers 23-25, 31, 34, 39 83 and 93. If any of these bands are positive and the patient is experiencing symptoms of Lyme disease, they may feel treatment is warranted. This test is generally considered the most reliable test currently available although it is estimated to be only 57% accurate according to IGeneX labs. Other Lyme literate physicians such as functional M.D., Dr. Todd Watts has stated it to be 70% inaccurate in his practice. Many allopathic doctors will not consider using the western blot unless the ELISA is positive, thus missing an important diagnostic tool. The western blot is only focused toward the diagnosis of Borrelia burgdorferi, the primary bacteria associated w/ Lyme, & not other species of Borrelia that may cause Lyme disease or other problematic co-infections like Bartonella, Babesia, Mycoplasma, & more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Index - What Came Next Wasn’t Luck.</image:title>
<image:caption>It was work. Hard, relentless work to rebuild a life, and create something that didn’t exist when I needed it most. Hi, I’m PJ Harlow. Founder of PJ Harlow Wellness Inc., a virtual IICRC Certified, Forensic Mold Consultancy built for smart, health-conscious homeowners who want to feel in control of their home’s mold project. We guide people like you through every phase of the home recovery process, from early suspicion and DNA dust testing to inspection referrals, planning, remediation, small particle cleaning and recovery. But more than that, we give structure to a process that can easily consume people, their health, their finances, their relationships, and their sanity.</image:caption>
